Historic photograph turns up

This hitherto unpublished photograph, recently discovered in our archives, was taken minutes after Allan MacRae, chairman of the Assynt Crofters Trust, announced at a special meeting held in Stoer Primary School on December 8 1992 that the trust had had their bid to buy the North Assynt Estate accepted.

On the left of the photo, trust secretary Bill Ritchie, Achmelvich, pours a glass of champagne, assisted by Kenny John Matheson, Clachtoll. David Bowes from Skerray, the subject of a warm tribute from a reader in the letter in our April 2010 issue, holds a basin to catch any spillage while a member of the media brandishes a microphone.

The photograph was taken by Donald MacLeod of Am Bratach, who had travelled to the hastily-called meeting with David Bowes, after they were alerted by Issie MacPhail, daughter of a Clashmore (Stoer) crofter, that an important announcement on the fate of the estate was imminent.
