Am Bratach No. 192 Invercharron runs into poor weather The wet day the Invercharron Traditional Highland Games, shared with much of the rest of the country on September 15, took its toll. As you were aware the weather was against us this year and resulted in a major drop in the gate numbers, commented committee spokesman, Michael Baird. In the senior heavyweights, Murray Gunn of Halkirk came away with the Frews Overall Heavies Shield while in the equivalent heavy events for novices, Neil Wiseman from Elgin won the Kincraig Trophy. Fifteen-year-old Siobhan Monaghan, Lairg, took home the Charlie OBrien Trophy (confined) and the BP Oil Challenge Trophy (open) in the junior piping competition for pipers aged 15 years and under. In the class for pipers aged 16-18, Cammy Bell of Dingwall won the Cairngorm Shield. Senior piping champion and winner of the Pipe Major Matheson Cup was Glyn Morris, Kingussie. In the open track events, Dingwall brothers, Ross and Fraser MacDonald, scooped the J Hewitt Trophy (100/200m), Ross also winning the Kincardine Community Council Trophy and the Winnie Ewing Trophy. The open Cycling Games Trophy was shared by David Matheson and Michael van de Vlies of Muir-of-Ord.The Phil Cunningham & Aly Bain Trophy for taking first place in the hill race was awarded to Ross Bannerman from Nigg. Female winner was Roxy Bannerman, Nigg, who received the Gneiss Shield. The Creich Community Council Trophy, awarded to the winners of the open 110 stone tug o war competition, went to Elgin, as did the Bank of Scotland Cup (no weight restriction). In the ladies section, the Kyle of Sutherland Gala Ladies Team (above) won the Ronnie Cameron Cup. As we went to press, results from the dancing competitions, moved to Ardgay hall because of the rain, were not available. In the new, childrens fancy dress competition, Mr Baird explained that the places were not recorded. We feature on this months front cover one of the colourful families taking part, the Munros from Altass. |
