Alasdair is a polymath: musician, historian, Gaelic language teacher, medical practitioner and crofter. He lives with his wife and daughter on the family croft in Rogart.

His interests have always reflected his Highland background. He was born in Canada, shortly after his family emigrated in the late 1950s. He took an interest in Gaelic as a child and acquired his first steps in Gaelic from his mother, a native of Rogart with family links to the parish of Durness. He returned to the home croft permanently in the 1990s, after completing a PhD, and after a short while teaching Gaelic and history at the University of Toronto. For nine years he ran a Gaelic language centre in Rogart, but now teaches Gaelic and history at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig in Skye

Piping has been in the family for generations but Alasdair’s own tuition has been under the direction of a number of notable players such as Pipe Major Ed Neigh, Canada; Pipe Major Donald Morrison, Aberdeen and South Uist; and for the last nearly fifteen years has learned with Pipe Major William Macdonald, Benbecula. His major interest is in ceòl mòr, particularly the compositions of Iain Dall
