James, who
comes from Lochinver, was a pupil of Seordag Murray, Kenneth
Mackenzie and Pipe Major Norman Gillies before leaving home to
study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow
where he carried out research on the songs of his native Assynt
for his honours dissertation
In 2004 he
was voted BBC Radio Scotland Young Traditional Musician of the
Year, the first Gaelic singer to receive the award. Then, last
October, he won the men's gold medal at the Royal National Mod,
in Fort William.
He has also
been a student at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, where has been building
up confidence in his Gaelic
A regular recitalist
on TV, James's first CD, Siubhal, was issued in 2005. Another
was launched at the 2007 Royal National Mod
On May 17 2008,
James was featured in the award-winning Herald magazine. The
Lifelines full-page feature comprises interviews with people
following unusual occupations. When not singing, James works
as events officer with Falkirk Council, preparing the ground
for the 2008 Royal National Mod. It will held in the town on
October 10-17 2008. |
