As a boy in Wick, James studied the accordion with the late Addie Harper and also at Feis Cataibh

He went on to graduate in traditional Scottish music from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music before attending the Irish World Music Centre at the University of Limerick where he became an Irish music performance graduate after studying the piano under Professor Mícheal Ó Súilleabháin

In 2005, James was commissioned by Celtic Connections to write a suite, An Cuan. More recently, he was commissioned by Highland 2007 to write a symphony.

His first CD, James Ross by James Ross, was issued on Greentrax label

James plays an important part in highlighting the relevance of Gaelic and the Gaelic linguistic heritage in Caithness
