Taigh na Gàidhlig Mhealanais (the Melness Gaelic centre) is a small voluntary group established in the heart of the Reay Country (a name sometimes applied to the lands once held by Lord Reay, chief of the Clan Mackay) in the early 1980s to foster the Gaelic language and culture.

Gaelic language classes and feis-type activities have been a constant theme ever since, but not the only work carried out by the organisation, which has no paid staff.

Towards the end of 2005, the leading expert on Scotland's Gaelic dialects, Dr James H Grant of Rothiemurchus, began working for the group on what has turned out to be by far most comprehensive study of the Mackay dialect of Gaelic ever undertaken, and one of the most extensive of any dialect in the language.

Ùrachadh, the latest project from Taigh na Gàidhlig Mhealanais, brings the culture of the Mackay and Assynt MacLeod homelands — from the 1600s up to the present day — to a Highland audience in a manner never attempted before. For this, it has attracted the services of an exceptionally talented group of young minstrels from Caithness and Sutherland, and a distinguished academic with particular expertise in this field.
